The US FDA recommends that you take a multidose multistate sexual health questionnaire (MSHS) about your health and health-related ``sexual activity`` if you experience erectile dysfunction (ED), decreased sexual desire, erectile dysfunction (ED), decreased volume of ejaculate, reduced volume of ejaculate, ejaculatory dysfunction, decreased desire for sex, or poor erectile function. The recommendation applies to all patients older than 60.
The advice was based on data from a study of patients with erectile dysfunction who took a standardized multistate questionnaire before and after receiving sildenafil citrate (the active ingredient in Viagra) for two weeks. Sildenafil was the primary ED treatment. The study demonstrated that patients taking sildenafil experienced greater improvement than those taking a placebo (placebo).
In another part of the report,Drug Safetymagazine, conducted by the FDA, described sildenafil as being “well tolerated” and being effective. The study demonstrated that sildenafil reduced blood flow to the penis. The drug is now also approved for the treatment of ED.
This is not the first time the FDA has advised people not to take multistate medications because of the risk of adverse events, including erectile dysfunction.
A 2009 study in theJournal of the American Medical Associationfound that sildenafil could increase the risk of developing erectile dysfunction in men with diabetes.

Background:The first FDA-approved medication for erectile dysfunction,Viagra(sildenafil citrate), was discovered in a laboratory setting, but its use to date has not been thoroughly studied. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the medication on men with erectile dysfunction.
Methods:We examined data from the Canadian Food and Drug Administration (CFPDA) drug database for the use of Viagra (sildenafil citrate) in men with erectile dysfunction. We also examined data from a larger number of other studies in the United States, Europe, and other countries that have used sildenafil. This analysis was performed using publicly available data sources from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDDA) to assess the effectiveness of sildenafil for men with erectile dysfunction.
Results:Viagra was significantly more effective than either Viagra or Viagra alone in terms of reducing erectile dysfunction scores. The results were consistent across all other studies, and there was no difference in the efficacy of either treatment among the different groups.
Conclusion:This study suggests that the use of sildenafil as an agent for erectile dysfunction may have utility for many men with erectile dysfunction.
